Since 1974, fans and racers have flocked to Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio for fantastic drag racing and the famous $1.00-per-pound ice cream. And this past weekend, Car Craft was in the house for the 12th Annual NHRA Mello Yello Summit Racing Equipment Nationals. The Summit Nats is a fan favorite as the schedule is filled with virtually every class contested by NHRA. Combine hundreds of race cars with the pristine facility and you get a true theme park type experience with the main attraction being drag racing on the super smooth quarter-mile. To give fans a spectacular view, the Bader’s lined the track with massive grandstands and hospitality suites. In addition, the track offers a variety of awesome shooting locations and we took full advantage of them.
NHRA did its job providing fans with a full plate of racing, unbelievable pit action, and a full manufacturer’s midway. Fans were also treated to the School of Automotive Machinists and Technology Factory Stock Showdown, tire-frying supercharged Gassers, and loads of side-by-side racing in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Pro Stock Bike, and Pro Modified. Despite indulging a few times in the $1.00-per-pound ice cream, we did manage to get out there and capture the action like only Car Craft knows how. Top Dragster is one of the hottest classes in NHRA competition. Competitors use blower, nitrous, and unlimited cubic inches to run as quick as 6.00 in the quarter. This digger is motivated by a big-block Chevy with a ProCharger and EFI.
Kristi Shipp went to the third round in Super Stock with her beautiful 1969 Camaro. Long-time Stock racer Gary Russell ran 10.30s with his trusty A/Stock Camaro. Daryl Bureski made some nice runs in his 1970 442 convertible. Bureski was ran consistent mid-11s in G/SA. Dylan Stott went a couple of rounds in Top Sportsman with this amazing 2018 Shelby GT350 built by Jerry Haas. The Mustang was nitrous injected and ran 6.60s at 209 mph.
Dan Fletcher was behind the wheel of his 1969 Camaro Stocker in Norwalk. While he fell early in Stock, he captured a win in Super Comp. Charlie Westcott Jr. Gave Ford fans something to cheer about. He qualified his Ford Mustang, but lost in round one.
New Jersey’s Todd Hoven kisses the “Wally” trophy he received after winning Stock Eliminator. Hoven drove Al Carp’s Hemi Dodge that’s powered by a Ray Barton Hemi. Jimmy Ronzello went deep in Super Stock behind the wheel of his Shelby GT500. Ronzello’s mount is actually one of the original test mules for Ford’s Cobra Jet program. Joe Marcinowski rowed the four-speed in his clean 1979 Chevy Camaro. Marcinowski qualified with an 11.61 and lost with a redlight in the second round. Super Stock was captured by drag racing journalist John DiBartolomeo.
DiBartolomeo made it through six rounds, defeating the ’65 Hemi Dodge of Bob Marshall in the final. Bob Marshall ran strong with his 1965 Hemi-powered Coronet all weekend. He lasted until the final where he was defeated by John DiBartolomeo. Here’s a unique matchup in Comp Eliminator: Steve Comella’s ’Cuda packs a Hemi and a four-speed, while the roadster of Steve Ambrose is motivated by a 300-inch in-line six Ford with a billet cylinder head and fuel injection. Ambrose got the best of the Mopar this round. Indy’s Eddie Krawiec outlasted the tough field in Pro Stock Motorcycle.
His Harley was strong, running in the 6s at nearly 200 mph.
